Shabu Shabu not not good good

SO we are now trying to eat out in NYC, you, the fictional reader who as yet does not exist, will be seeing regular restraunt reviews as we trek around this city spending my girl's student loans.
we have had pretty mediocre meals in the city so far. Suzie's white chinese food hut has been the best so far, with good green string beans and an eager waiter who fills your water glass before it hits the table.

the sushi place, okinawa was not bad. they had this sunomono that was like no sunomono i have had before, it was like a flat dish with a really soya-saucy saucy sauce, then everything was sort of laid out flat and there was an assortment of seafood. Interesting but still not holding a candle to what i know to be the traditional ebi sunomono - baby shrimp and glass noodles ( i hear they are made of somehting crazy like yam, unfortunately there is no wikipedia entry so we may never know) in that vinegar sauce that my girl cringes when i drink the remnants of, and some cheap veggies thrown in for looks. The rolls were nice tho.

Again the rolls were nice at cafe shabu shabu but i just did not feel the love on the shabu shabu. I though it was shabby shabby (you didnt expect me to hold back on that one did you really?) For the uninitiated (as i was until yesterday), shabu shabu is like hot pot without the exciting flavours. they give you a bowl of boiling water, and you boil various meats mushrooms and cabbage within said bowl. Because we didnt want pork or spicy soup, they gave us clear water with a piece of seaweed, to cook in. We also mixed beef and seafood, which made for a rather strange soup.

The shabu shabu has entertainment value but just no flavour payoff after all your hard culinary work. Further, considering the other options out there for the person who wants to pay restraunt prices to cook yourself, shabu shabu doesnt have the entertianment value of yakiniku, or fondue or raclette. Yakiniku is like smoking and eating at the same time, fondue is all gooey and romantic, tempting comedy to break out at any moment with long strings of cheeze and hot pronged pokers, and raclette you feel like an italian pizza pieman and heidi all at once.

well, onward and upward, well really downward and eastward. i will attempt to further report into the void what I eat. Hopefully there is some turkish coffee in my future,
